Before this year, I had never taken a ceramics class before and had barely even touched clay. I have learned so much from Mrs. Sanyour and really learned to love working with clay. In the beginning, I could barely even center the clay, but now I have learned how to throw cylinders, bowls, and plates. I have also learned how to make pinch pots, coil pots, and slabs. For my show, I have decided to display my skills that I have learned throwing, trimming, and glazing. I have created 4 plates. I found out early on that plates were not only fun to make, but I was good at making them. I had the original plan of carving into my plates. I thought this would be a fun idea because my medium of choice is drawing and painting and I thought it would be interesting to incorporate drawing and painting into my plates. When I realized that I didn’t have enough time for this, I was sad but I quickly thought of a new plan that turned out to be very fun to make. I threw my plates, put them in the kiln and then I was ready to glaze. Before glazing, I put tape on the plates and then glazed so that when I pulled off the tape I would have nice, clean lines. The places where I laid down tape represent the negative space in my pieces. With most of my pieces, I tried to use glazes that were similar to each other in color to represent value; for example, on one plate I used light pink and violet, for another I used red and orange and lastly I used black and dark blue. To be completely honest, I was a little disappointed in the way the plates came out of the glaze kiln. I wasn’t expecting for the colors to be the same as they were before they were fired, but some of the colors blended together and came out looking messy. However, I am not upset about this because it was a learning experience for the next time I throw. Next year I will be taking IB drawing and painting. This semester, I have learned so much about the elements and principles of art through taking ceramics and I know it will help me with my IB art career at Trinity.
